Family Planning

Our doctors and nurse-midwives have access to the latest options in contraception for our patients.

Family Planning is the voluntary, pre-pregnancy planning and action of people to prevent, delay, or achieve a pregnancy. At West Suburban Women's Health we provide a Family Planning program that promotes the well-being of families; responsible behavior, healthy mothers and babies.

If contraception to prevent pregnancy is desired, please follow this link for more information.

LEEP Services

When tests show that you have abnormal cells on the cervix, your doctor may offer you a LEEP (Loop Electrocautery Excision Procedure). LEEP is used to remove the abnormal cells from your cervix. This is accomplished by using a thin wire loop with an electric current that can cut away a thin layer of the surface cells of the cervix.

A LEEP procedure may be recommended as a treatment for abnormal cervical tissue or dysplasia. Dysplasia is the word used to describe precancerous cell changes found on the cervix and is characterized by the degree of severity - mild, moderate or severe. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is believed to be the primary cause of most abnormal cervical tissue. LEEP is most commonly recommended as a treatment for high grade dysplasia, although in certain situations it may also be used to treat low grade dysplasia.

Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a method of viewing the cervix under magnification with an instrument called a colposcope. This procedure is indicated when pap smear results are abnormal. The microscope (colposcope) helps the physician to identify any abnormality on your cervix. A biopsy can then be performed during this procedure. Correlation of this biopsy with your pap results allows the proper further management to be determined by the physician.

Infertility

We consider a couple to be infertile if they have been unable to achieve pregnancy in 12 months of having sex without using any birth control. This is a fairly common problem; about 14% of couples in the United States are considered infertile.

Infertility in the woman may be caused by any of the following…

  • hormone problems which prevent ovulation or prevent implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus
  • physical problems such as scarring of the tubes due to pelvic infections or endometriosis
  • genetic problems such as Turner's syndrome
  • congenital abnormalities of the uterus or cervix
  • hormonal factors which can prevent normal ovulation
  • abnormalities in the cervical mucus
  • production of antibodies which attack the sperm
  • smoking, alcohol or marijuana use
  • thyroid disease, diabetes, or tumors of the pituitary gland

The following tests may be done to aid in diagnosis and treatment…

  • ovulation predictor kits to see if the woman is ovulating
  • semen analysis to determine if the male partner is producing normal sperm
  • hysterosalpingogram to see if the woman's tubes are open
  • progesterone test to see if a woman is ovulating adequately
